Rhode Island General Election Day Administration
Early voting currently runs weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the 20 days before an election. The council discussed whether to add Saturday hours to make voting easier.
Kayak and Boating Safety at Sprague Bridge
Possible action on no-wake zones near the Sprague Bridge and the Narrow River was scheduled. Such rules affect boater behavior, shoreline erosion, and safety for paddlers in a busy waterway.
Beach safety and security
A targeted, gang-related stabbing at the Town Beach on May 19 raised big questions about pre-season beach security. Chief Rekas detailed staffing that day, and the Council is convening all stakeholders to rethink policies for the shoulder season.
General Election certification and voter list canvass
The board will finalize the voting list for the September 9 primary at its August 19 meeting. Residents at this meeting asked how the final canvass works and how to challenge a voter's status.
$3M Fire Station Renovations Bond Question
A $3 million bond on the November ballot would expand and renovate the north end fire station with a second floor, five bunk rooms, an ADA elevator, and modern safety features. Average homeowners would pay about $21 more per year for 20 years.
$3 Million Fire Station Bond Referendum
The town wants voters to decide on $3 million in bonds to expand, renovate and equip its fire stations. The Council's resolution now goes to the General Assembly to authorize the referendum — so this could show up on a future ballot and affect your tax bill if it passes.
Assistant Solicitor investigation disclosure
Planning Board Chair Tom Callahan publicly urged the council to finish — and be transparent about — its investigation into alleged threatening behavior by an assistant solicitor, one of the town's vendors, following a March 17 incident. The council president said an update could come as early as the next meeting.
Flock license plate recognition cameras
The council killed the town's contract with Flock Safety after months of privacy concerns from residents and the ACLU. Four cameras had been tracking license plates; police argued the system solves crimes at no cost to taxpayers, but the 5-0 vote ends it immediately with any penalties absorbed by the town.
Precinct 2002 polling place relocation
The Board of Canvassers budget is up significantly due to this year's primary and general election. One polling place is changing from the Narragansett Yacht Club to the North Beach Clubhouse.
Extended World Cup alcohol hours — Narragansett opts out
The state allowed towns to extend bar hours for the World Cup; Narragansett said no, citing safety and neighborhood impacts. Bars keep their existing license hours.
Town Beach Security and Incident Response
After a violent incident at the town beach — which the Town Manager stressed was a targeted attack on a rival gang, not random violence — the council ordered a full review of beach security policies with all stakeholders. Police staffing is already being increased from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Congdon Street Parking Restrictions
The proposed no-parking zone on Congdon Street was tabled after the police chief and neighbors said it would just push parking and noise problems onto Summer, Frank Lowe, and Caswell Streets. Emergency no-parking near Boon Street is in effect in the meantime.
Noise Ordinance Overhaul
The current noise ordinance is essentially unenforceable — no citations in roughly 18-20 years. A rewrite is in the works but was continued to April 6 for a work session to sort out start times (10 vs. 11 p.m.), the 10-second measurement standard, zone buffers, and penalties for repeat offenders.
