New middle school and public safety complex bonds
Councilor Page reported the high school roof finished under budget, the new Wickford Middle School scored 183 on the CHIPS green-building scale (RIDE requires 180 for reimbursement), and construction fencing goes up in November. The public safety complex awaits DEM permits with move-in targeted for April 2028.
New middle school at 250 Tower Hill Road
The town's middle school rebuild cleared its biggest local hurdle — zoning relief and master/preliminary plan approval. The project keeps the educational use, improves traffic circulation with dedicated pickup/drop-off lanes, and preserves historic stone walls in the Scenic Overlay District.
New middle school water strategy
The schools haven't decided whether to irrigate fields with wells or town water. The commission waived hydraulic modeling for now, but a town-water connection would still need modeling proving the system can handle it, plus town council approval.
School facility bond appropriation
The town and schools met with state legislators about next year's budget. State aid looks flat or down about $25,000, so any new school costs fall on local taxpayers. Lawmakers also discussed the proposed new school funding formula and transportation and special education costs.
