Sidewalk snow clearing gap
A resolution pushes RIPTA to do a better job clearing snow and ice from bus stops, which members said endangers riders. Councilwoman AnderBois added that the state should fully fund RIPTA, noting workers were shoveling stops themselves.
Snow plow vendor and equipment shortage
DPW has 19 vendors with 31 pieces of equipment signed up — fewer big trucks than in past years — and statewide every municipality is competing for the same scarce plows. Providence pays vendors about 20% more than the state does.
Salt storage and supply
With stores sold out of salt during the freeze, the council approved a plan for DPW to distribute free salt to residents at city locations, so people can treat their icy sidewalks.
Bridge repairs on Point Street and Memorial Boulevard
The council authorized the mayor to sign agreements with RIDOT to rehabilitate the Point Street Bridge and repair the Memorial Boulevard North Bridge.
Downtown right-on-red stops
Goncalves' ordinance would require drivers to come to a full stop before turning right on red at all downtown intersections starting in 2027, part of Vision Zero.
Utility accountability and road repair positions
Residents complained that utility companies dig up roads without notice and leave bad repairs. The budget adds two new positions to hold utilities accountable and keep neighbors informed.
Overnight parking permits citywide
A resolution asks Public Works to explore overnight parking permits without geographic limits, after constituents were hit with $250 tickets when cars couldn't be moved during snow bans.
Save RIPTA legislative package
A resolution backing the 2026 Save RIPTA legislative package was withdrawn from the floor and sent to the state legislative affairs committee for further work.
